I love Megan Petasky’s characters…

candle_man_by_p1nk1ce-d6s157e

I’m starting to think I need a “spindly” tag on this blog. Perhaps I’m drawn to these wiry creatures because the sharp angular form is uniquely expressive.

I have plenty to post this week, but my commentary may be extra sparse because on top of my regular medical issues I have what can only be described as a caricature of a cold…I’m the “before” person in the NyQuil commercials. It’s ridiculous.

Anyway, have a look at Meghan Howland’s work.

Folly

ennui

Many of her images involve birds in flight, obscuring the faces of her subjects…or wild flowers in rampant bloom. Rather fascinating.

Happy New Year!

New Year, New Developments!

A few blog announcements…

1) There is a new FACEBOOK PAGE for instant access to posts as they go up. PLUS, to make it extra interesting, I will be sharing a mixed flurry of arts and oddities on the page that are NOT posted here. So please add or follow.

fb

2) I am removing the disclaimer about my medical issues that has been on the bottom of my posts for the past year.

88f6398fa8c1c00013764e602d6d2f03

Typing is still too painful for the most part, but I am convinced that I WILL recover this year (doctor predictions be damned!)…so, although I continue to contend with it, I’m taking the illness off the site, until further notice.

bitten

3) There will be a new occasional quote feature (with visuals) to post the wisdom/humor/joy/depth I’ve encountered in the words of others during my period of relative silence. I suppose this takes the blog to a more personal level, via a small window into my brain and the things that move me.

il_570xN.383092335_awmf

4) With the aid of a dearly helpful friend, I will be opening an online store! First for SWS products, then personal designs when I am once again up to making things. All proceeds go to medical care.

Now let’s all imagine that my healthy will gracefully allow these things to happen! :-) Thanks so much for reading…

Daniel Martin Diaz: The Soul of Science

Daniel Martin Diaz: Soul of Science is a series that speaks to me on such a personal level, as I am always steeped in some swirling combination of art, science, consciousness and philosophical musings…

tumblr_mpqlwk60aB1ql3jtzo6_500

In the artist’s own words:
In the fall, I became immersed in scientific and philosophical theories. In particular, I was obsessed with scientific diagrams, which explain theories and properties through drawings.

tumblr_mpqlwk60aB1ql3jtzo8_500

My interests also included subjects such as self-aware systems, philosophy, cellular automata, phase transitions, time travel, mystical behaviors at atomic and sub-atomic levels, and the mysteries of consciousness.

tumblr_mpqlwk60aB1ql3jtzo2_500

Although these rudimentary drawings were without any leanings towards aesthetics, I found them to be beautiful, though that is clearly not their intention. I was inspired to create my own interpretations of the concepts of consciousness and other theories on a scientific, philosophical, and spiritual level through a simplified means such as drawing.

tumblr_mpqlwk60aB1ql3jtzo5_500

All of the projects I have created begin as drawings, which I feel have a beauty and intimacy that paintings cannot capture. The subtle lines that graphite creates and the quickness with which one can capture an idea makes this medium alluring.

Vanitas art by Toru Kamei has stolen our heat.  “Toru KAMEI was born in 1976. He is inspired by Vanitas and try to express transience but beautiful, by drawing common vanitas symbols include skulls, which are a reminder of the certainty of death, flower, which symbolize transience of beauty.”

Here is a lovely way to start your week. The bats may not fit the vanitas theme, but, well, SWS welcomes the deviation.

Hobo Nickels have seen a renewed interest in recent years. In the Great Depression, many hobos worked over nickels, creating folk art. The history goes back earlier, and you can read more here. Today SWS shares the talent of Mr. The Hobo Nickels. What is especially appealing to collectors on a shoestring budget is his affordable plastic replicas, like the three at the bottom.

Ransom and Mitchell: Across from Familiar

I was remiss in posting about this show at Roque La Rue when it actually happened, because I was dealing with hospital things.

rm_caged-682x1024

I’ve spent many years pouring over art and photography sites, collecting literally thousands of links. Ransom and Mitchell are by far my favorite photography team ever and that is saying hell of a lot!

rm_goldenhind-682x1024

They don’t just photograph, they create entire worlds. Each image is a surreal, vivid tableau that you can get lost in. I have half a mind to carry their portfolio with me and accost random strangers on the street with it just to spread the beauty!

rm_absinthe-1024x704

From the exhibit description:

San Francisco based art power duo Ransom & Mitchell create compelling, dark pop-baroque imagery using a distinctive blend of photography, digital elements, and most surprisingly, large scale and elaborate hand built sets, costumes, and props. For this exhibition, “Across From Familiar “, we specially selected a series of works that all share a similar ornately beautiful yet macabre aesthetic.

rm_wreckage-679x1024

I’ll tell you a secret. Sometimes when my health is particularly bad, I think of appearing in one of their photos when I recover…and I’m re-inspired!

Jasmine Becket-Griffith

I had to pause for a moment upon seeing Jasmine Becket-Griffith’s new painting because I had yet to see my (oddball) eye color and hair depicted in a piece of art.

I can never give an answer when asked for my eye color. The center near the pupil is brown, then it gets gold, then green/grey in some kind of bizarre starburst.

1509169_10152113030839367_116646544_n

I love the innocence and sadness of this piece (and many of her pieces).
